If you’ve been searching for PS3 repair information, you’ve probably come across the term “delid” and wondered what on earth people are talking about. Here’s the plain version: a delid is when you carefully peel off the metal cap on top of a computer chip to access the thermal paste underneath.
Sounds simple. It’s not. And it’s specific to a few problematic consoles — PS3 being one of the main ones.
What Is An IHS?
The IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) is the metal cover soldered onto the top of a CPU or GPU. Its job is to distribute heat evenly across the surface so the heatsink can cool it efficiently.
On a PS3, Sony soldered the IHS directly onto the chip. Between the chip and the IHS is thermal paste.
Over time, that thermal paste degrades. It dries out, cracks, and stops conducting heat effectively. When that happens, the chip overheats, and the console shuts itself down.
Why You Can’t Just Clean It Like A Normal Console
With most consoles — PS4, Xbox One, even original Xbox — you can access the thermal paste without opening up the chip itself. You unscrew the heatsink, wipe off the old paste, and apply new paste directly to the chip’s surface.
PS3? Not so much.
Sony’s design means the thermal paste is underneath the IHS. You can’t reach it without removing the IHS. And that’s where the problem starts.

Both the ApU and CPU have lids ontop of the chips and thermal paste is underneath.
The lids are stuck down on a frame surrounding the chips and special tools are required to remove them carefully as one wrong move kills the chips. Not Good !
The Delid Process
In theory, it’s straightforward:
- Heat the IHS carefully (usually with a heat gun or hot water) to soften the solder that’s holding it in place
- Very carefully peel or pry the IHS away from the chip
- Clean off the old thermal paste from both the IHS and the chip surface
- Apply new thermal paste
- Resolder the IHS back onto the chip (or use a high-strength adhesive if you’re not re-soldering)
In practice, every step is a potential failure point.
Why It’s Risky
The Solder Is Brittle
PS3s are old now (we’re talking 2006-2017 depending on the model). The solder connecting the IHS to the chip has been through years of thermal cycles — heating up during use, cooling down when off. That makes it brittle. Really brittle.
When you apply heat to soften it, sometimes it doesn’t soften evenly. Sometimes it cracks before you even touch it.
The Chip Is Fragile
The chip underneath is just a piece of silicon with millions of transistors etched into it. It’s maybe 1cm square. There are tiny bond wires connecting the die to the pins around it — you can see them if you look close enough.
If you slip with a pry tool and scratch the die, you’ve damaged the silicon. The console will never work again.
The Thermal Interface
Even if you get the IHS off without breaking anything, you now have a bare chip with no protection. If you accidentally scratch it, if paste gets on the bond wires, if you apply too much pressure reassembling — any of these can cause failure.
Reassembly
Getting the IHS back on and making sure it re-establishes proper thermal contact is its own challenge. Too loose and you have poor heat transfer (back to square one). Too tight and you risk cracking the die.
When Is It Necessary?
A delid is necessary when:
- The PS3 is throttling or shutting down due to thermal issues
- You’ve already done a standard clean (dust removal, accessible thermal paste renewal) and it didn’t help
- You can verify that the problem is specifically the paste under the IHS (usually through testing and diagnostics)
A delid is NOT necessary when:
- The console just needs a dust clean
- You haven’t tried renewing the accessible thermal paste yet
- You’re not sure if the IHS is actually the problem

Why You Should Care
If you own a PS3 and it’s getting hot or shutting down, you need to get it sorted. But you don’t necessarily need a delid. A clean and thermal paste renewal might be all you need.
If a shop immediately tells you that you need a delid without trying anything else first, that’s a red flag. A proper diagnosis should rule out the simpler fixes before jumping to the risky one.
