Common Nintendo Switch Faults We See

• Joy-Con drift By far the most common fault on this model. The analogue stick’s carbon-pad contacts wear down over time and start registering movement that isn’t happening. Cleaning helps briefly; a worn stick needs replacing properly.
• Charging port failure Years of plugging and unplugging weakens the solder joints under the USB-C port. Left too long, it can damage the power management chip on the board — at that point it needs microsoldering, not just a new port.
• Joy-Con rail / connection issues The rails that let Joy-Cons slide on and off wear with repeated use, causing loose fit or connection drop-outs, wireless or docked.
• Cracked kickstand The original Switch’s kickstand is a known weak point — thin, plastic, and prone to snapping if the console’s dropped or the stand’s forced at the wrong angle.
• No signal when docked Usually the HDMI connection either in the dock itself or on the console — sometimes a simple fix, sometimes board-level depending on what’s behind it.
• Game card reader faults Bent pins from a cartridge pushed in at the wrong angle are the usual cause. The card reader shares its module with the headphone jack on this model, so a fault can affect both.
• Battery problems Won’t hold charge, drains fast, or won’t power on at all (“black screen of death”). More common on early units that have had years of charge cycles.
• Dead console No lights, no fan, nothing — before you write it off, it’s worth a proper diagnosis. Often it’s a cable, a power brick, or a stuck power state rather than a genuinely dead board.

Board-level, not just parts-swapping: A damaged charging port that’s taken the power IC with it, or a mainboard fault behind a “dead” console, needs component-level microsoldering. That’s standard here, not an add-on.
