The game looks incredible. Ray-traced reflections everywhere, NPCs with genuine behaviour patterns instead of scripted loops, and a draw distance that lets you see for actual miles. But it comes at a cost: sustained GPU load that keeps your PS5 working flat out for extended play sessions.

On a PS5 Pro with good thermal design, this is fine. On an original PS5 that hasn’t been serviced in two years, GTA 6 is going to expose every thermal weakness your console has. The fan will scream. Frame rates will dip. You might get throttling.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

BioWare’s return to single-player RPGs is a proper console showcase. Stunning art direction, complex character animations, and real-time combat that doesn’t pull punches. This game looks like it’s pushing the PS5 harder than most titles released in the last two years.

Thermal load is consistent and substantial. Not as extreme as GTA 6 peaks, but relentless. Good for testing whether your console is in healthy condition.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Square Enix finished this game perfectly. The open world is beautiful, the character models are detailed, and the sheer ambition of what’s on screen at any given moment is impressive. And yeah, it runs hot during the big setpieces.

FFVII Rebirth is the kind of game that benefits from a well-maintained PS5. Run it on a clean, thermally fresh console and it’s flawless. Run it on one that’s never been serviced and you’ll notice performance dips.

Tekken 8

Fighting games don’t typically stress cooling, but Tekken 8 is beautifully rendered and runs at high frame rates. More importantly, it’s a game you play for hours in intense competitive sessions. Extended play + consistent load = heat generation.

Controller wear is the bigger issue here. Tournament players using Tekken 8 for practice hit analog sticks with intensity. Stick drift isn’t just a possibility — it’s inevitable with heavy play. Budget for controller repairs if you’re serious about fighting games.

Metaphor: ReFantazio

Atlus’s stylish JRPG is demanding in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. The UI is beautiful and complex, character models in dungeon battles are detailed, and the game runs at a locked frame rate that requires sustained GPU performance.

Not as thermally stressful as GTA 6, but consistent enough that an older PS5 will work for it.

Helldivers 2

Cooperative mayhem at 60fps. Explosions everywhere, dozens of enemies on screen, procedurally generated maps that the console has to render on the fly. It’s not pushing individual pixel count like single-player games, but it’s keeping GPU and CPU under constant load for extended sessions.

Great for stress-testing whether your console’s cooling is still effective.

Indiana Jones & the Great Circle

Released late 2024, this is proof that developers can still push the PS5 graphics-wise if they’re clever about optimization. Impressive visuals, solid performance, and thermals that stay reasonable if your console is in good shape.

Why Thermal Maintenance Matters Now

These games aren’t optional loading tests anymore. They’re the standard. GTA 6 especially is going to be played by millions of people on PS5, and a significant chunk of them are going to have consoles that have never been serviced internally.

You can already predict what’s going to happen: forum posts about overheating, YouTube videos of PS5 fans at full blast, and reports of throttling during key story moments. And most of it could be prevented with a single thermal service.
